7 years ago my wife and I decided we clearly needed to travel to all 7 continents by our 7th wedding anniversary. This December, after just over 6 years, we finally made it...and now we are super broke. Like Ramen noodles broke. But we would have been much poorer in experience and heart had we missed such an awe inspiring, mind blowing, and truly epic experience.
Our journey started in Ushuaia, Argentina (the southern most city in the world) where we boarded our smaller than expected but friendly boat. Two days and countless sea-sickness pills later, we arrived in Antarctic waters, leaving behind the ever grumpy and tumultuous drake passage.
Seeing the South Shetland Islands after 2 days at sea was otherworldly and exhilarating. I felt so privileged to be able to see something that over human history so many people have fought so hard to get to. It’s a vast, wild, harsh and beautiful place. We were completely taken in with the views of mountains jutting from clear waters and scraping moody skies. The countless curious penguins that waddle over and hang out in the snow, the incredible icebergs subtly hinting at life below. Everything was magic. Everything was perfect. It was another world completely.
I hope you enjoy this small look into that world
